BP Celebrates First Gas from Its Deepwater ‘Megaproject’ Offshore Africa” by Melisa Cavcic | Jan. 2, 2025

BP has reached a significant milestone for the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 liquefied natural gas (LNG) project off the coasts of Mauritania and Senegal. The project is the largest in BP’s portfolio and one of the most complex and deepest gas developments in Africa.

The company has confirmed the start of gas flow from wells to the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) GTA for the next stage of commissioning. With a production capacity of 2.3 million tons of LNG annually for over 20 years, the GTA Phase 1 development is expected to have a major impact on the economies of Mauritania and Senegal.

Dave Campbell, BP’s Senior Vice President for Mauritania and Senegal, expressed his pride in the strong relationships fostered with both countries through this project.

The FPSO is located approximately 40 kilometers offshore and has the deepest subsea infrastructure in Africa. Gas is being introduced to the FPSO from wells in water depths of up to 2,850 meters.

This milestone marks an important step towards Mauritania and Senegal becoming major players in the global gas market
