Ghana falter, Nigeria stumble, Senegal soar – How West African teams fared in the AFCON qualifiers

One of the most celebrated nations in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ghana, will be noticeably absent when the 2025 tournament kicks off next year in Morocco. Despite being four-time AFCON champions, the Black Stars suffered a stunning collapse in the qualifiers, finishing last in Group F behind Angola, Sudan, and Niger. With no wins and only three draws, Ghana managed a dismal three points, leaving them 11 points behind group winners, Angola. This unexpected result is a major blow for a nation that has traditionally been considered a top contender in the competition, boasting talented players like Mohamed Kudus. However, Ghana’s failure to qualify for the AFCON highlights the current crisis facing Ghanaian football.

Notably, Ghana’s disappointment is only one chapter in the larger story of West African teams’ struggles in the qualifying campaign. Along with Ghana, others such as Mali and Nigeria also failed to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON, signaling a larger issue for West African football
