Senegal – European Union: Bassirou Diomaye Faye wants a “rethought” partnership –

The President of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, welcomed the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, on Monday 22 April, during a meeting marked by the presence of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yassine Fall. The meeting concluded with a joint statement by the two sides.

During a press conference, Bassirou Diomaye Faye recalled the common history between Senegal and the European Union, as well as their collaboration in many fields. The Senegalese head of state stressed that the two sides share common challenges such as peace, security and climate change.He also mentioned the importance of strengthening the partnership between Senegal and the European Union, rethinking it and making it more fruitful to respond to current global challenges.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye called on Senegal’s partners to support his agenda to build a sovereign, just and prosperous nation in a developing Africa.The President of the Republic also listed the priorities of his government, which focus on the industrialization of the country, with a focus on the primary sector such as agriculture, livestock and fisheries.

He also stressed the importance of strengthening economic infrastructure such as railways, electrification, telecommunications and road networks. Reducing the budget deficit and improving the quality of public spending are also among the priorities of the Government of Senegal.For his part, Charles Michel praised Senegalese democracy and stressed the need for a “loyal, predictable partnership, without any hidden agenda”.

The President of the European Council also expressed the EU’s willingness to support the productive economy, infrastructure and vocational training in Senegal. He also recognized the need to find solutions for controversial issues such as fisheries in order to achieve mutual improvements.Finally, Charles Michel expressed his wish to see President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in Brussels to continue their cooperation. The European Union and Senegal enjoy close relations in many areas and are committed to working together for a prosperous common future
