Senegal: Senegalese PM Promises Bold Reforms in First Major Policy Speech

for a Senegalese audience

Senegal’s new Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko delivered his highly anticipated first major policy speech to parliament on Friday, outlining ambitious plans for transformation and change in the nation. In his speech, Sonko promised to close all foreign military bases and abolish an amnesty law that has resulted in political violence and numerous deaths in recent years. He also pledged to embark on a comprehensive National Transformation Agenda 2050, with the aim of improving governance, the economy, and social policies in Senegal.

The highly-anticipated speech was initially expected in April, but was delayed due to procedural issues within the Assembly and later postponed due to early legislative elections in November. These elections, however, gave Sonko a strong majority in parliament, paving the way for his plans to be implemented.

One of Sonko’s main objectives is to renegotiate contracts in key industries, such as energy, to prioritize the national interests of Senegal. He also announced plans to conduct an audit of the oil, gas, and mining sectors in the country, a move that has been welcomed by many.

“We advocate for a reassessment of global governance,” Sonko stated in his speech, calling for solidarity with Gaza and a reorganization of international institutions. He emphasized the importance of placing Senegal’s interests at the forefront in all international dealings.

In addition to his promises for domestic change, Sonko also addressed foreign affairs and called for a closer look at Senegal’s relationships with other nations. He vowed to prioritize national interests and advocated for a more equitable global governance system.

In conclusion, Sonko’s first major policy speech highlighted his determination to bring about transformation and progress in Senegal. This was met with enthusiasm and support from the nation, as Sonko’s strong majority in parliament demonstrates the people’s trust in his leadership and vision for the future of Senegal
