Senegalese Government Declares Victory
The Senegalese government announced on Sunday that it had won the parliamentary elections, with the majority of votes already counted. The ruling party, Pastef, is said to have achieved a “large majority.”
The victory for Pastef, led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, would give him a strong mandate to implement his radical agenda of economic and social reform, on which he was elected in March.
Meanwhile, the opposition coalition, made up of former President Macky Sall, Prime Minister Amadou Ba, and Dakar’s mayor Barthelemy Dias, were unable to secure enough votes to claim victory.
The parliamentary elections were seen as a crucial test for the young democracy, with many hoping for a peaceful and fair electoral process. Despite some reports of irregularities, the Senegalese government has assured that the elections were conducted smoothly.
The new government will face the challenges of economic recovery and social reforms amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. President Faye has promised to prioritize these issues and has vowed to bring about positive change for the people of Senegal.
The final results of the parliamentary elections are expected to be announced in the coming days
