CCTV Footage Exposes Ex-Sonko Staffer Who Stole from Adopted Son

A former employee of Nairobi’s ex-Governor Mike Sonko has been convicted of stealing a KSh 55,000 mobile phone from Sonko’s recently adopted son. Dedan Wamuya Mburu, also known as “Kababa”, was found guilty of the theft which occurred on February 10, 2025 along Matumbato Road in Upperhill, Nairobi County. Mburu, who was previously employed as a house employee for Sonko, admitted to having the phone but denied stealing it. However, CCTV footage presented in court showed Mburu taking the phone from the orphan and slipping it into his pocket before walking away.

During the trial, Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego emphasized the importance of the video evidence in proving the case beyond a reasonable doubt. In her ruling, she declared that Mburu’s actions were clear and incriminating.

In his defense, Mburu claimed he had taken the phone but had later returned it. However, the court did not find this explanation credible and convicted him of the theft.

The victim, a child whose father was tragically murdered in Mathare, was under the care of Sonko at the time of the incident. This is not the first time Mburu has been involved in a criminal case; he has a previous theft conviction from 2020.

Mburu’s sentencing is set for March 2025. He faces up to seven years in prison for his crime. This case serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, no matter their position or past employment. It also highlights the importance of surveillance and evidence in the pursuit of justice
