During the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, the President of the Republic of Senegal addressed the issue of the sustainable management of sanitation in the country’s municipalities. He expressed his concern about the growing urbanization of Senegal and the difficulties of development in municipalities, which have led to an upsurge in flooding and an increased demand for sanitation infrastructure.

The Head of State considered it a priority to intensify efforts to prevent and manage floods effectively, by mobilizing the National Fire Brigade and all the State services concerned. He also stressed the importance of mobilizing national solidarity mechanisms to help the affected populations.The President also asked the Prime Minister to evaluate the actions carried out over the last decade to combat flooding, with a view to reorienting the national sanitation strategy in a manner consistent with the new policies of land use planning, urban planning and housing. More specifically, he instructed the Prime Minister to update and generalize the Sanitation Master Plans (PDAs) as well as to propose a new Integrated Sanitation Development Program (PIDA).

The Head of State also hailed the success of the second edition of the National Mobilization Day “Setal Sunu Reew” held on Saturday, July 6. This day aims to raise awareness among the population about cleanliness and environmental preservation, and reflects the social anchoring of the concept of civic engagement “Sétal Sunu Reew”. The President congratulated all the actors involved in this initiative, including the government, administrative authorities, mayors, state services, private partners, young people, women and all the nation’s vital forces.In the same vein, the Head of State called on the government to ensure the proper preparation of the 3rd edition of the National Mobilization Day, which will be devoted this year to the theme of Reforestation. This day will be exceptionally celebrated throughout the national territory on Saturday 03 and Sunday 04 August.

In conclusion, in addressing this issue of the sustainable management of the sanitation of municipalities, the President of the Republic showed great concern and recalled the importance of working in a concerted and coordinated manner to solve these problems. The mobilization of all actors, whether public or private, young or old, is essential to address these challenges and ensure a cleaner and more sustainable future for Senegal
