On December 1st, President Macky Sall attended the High-Level Segment of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28). In his speech, the President emphasized the need for this year’s conference to be one of action and tangible commitments.He stressed that in order for this to happen, the right decisions must be made in regards to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, managing losses and damages, promoting a just and equitable energy transition, and mobilizing resources. Furthermore, the President underscored the importance of ensuring that the promised financing for climate action is readily available and accessible through efficient and transparent procedures.President Sall also highlighted the role of Africa in this global effort, stating that the continent must hold other nations accountable for their financial commitments. He went on to state that under the Joint External Debt Sustainability Initiative (JETP), Senegal is willing to collaborate with the International Monetary Fund, partner countries, and the Global Center for Adaptation to redirect some of its debt repayment towards funding climate action.In conclusion, President Sall’s speech demonstrates his strong commitment to fighting climate change and his unwavering determination to hold nations accountable for their promises.
