Senegal’s Debt and Deficit: A Harsh Economic Reality [Business Africa]

reporting on a current event in Senegal

Senegal is facing a severe financial crisis due to a recent report from the Court of Auditors that exposed alarming irregularities in the country’s public finances. As a result, the country is struggling to maintain investor confidence and avoid further damage to its economy.

The Court of Auditors’ report revealed a public debt of 99.67% of GDP, significantly higher than the previously announced figure of 74.41%. The budget deficit for 2023 has also been revised to 12.3% of GDP, casting doubts on the country’s ability to manage its finances effectively.

The report pointed out several accounting anomalies and opaque practices that have contributed to this financial crisis. These include unaccounted debts, questionable spending, and irregular transfers of funds between budgets. These practices have not only inflated the country’s debt but also worsened the already worrisome deficit.

Economist Ousmane Dieng sheds light on these issues, explaining that Senegal’s cash-based accounting system is outdated and needs to be replaced with a more modern accrual accounting system. This change would provide a better overview of the country’s financial situation and help prevent future crises.

This financial crisis has raised concerns among investors and put the country’s economy at risk. The government must swiftly address the issues highlighted by the Court of Auditors and take necessary measures to restore transparency and accountability in its public finances. Failure to do so may have dire consequences for Senegal’s economic growth and stability.
