Senegal – Gambia Relations Strengthened Through President’s First Official Visit”Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, made his first official visit to the Republic of Gambia on Saturday, April 20, 2024, accompanied by members of his government. He was warmly welcomed at Banjul International Airport by Gambian President, Adama Barrow, and members of the Gambian government.This visit, one of the first by President Faye since his inauguration, underscores the deep and close fraternal ties between Gambia and Senegal. It also symbolizes the shared desire of the two leaders to promote a spirit of kinship and mutual respect for a mutually beneficial collaboration between the governments and peoples of both countries.
During their meeting, the two leaders discussed the state of the historical bilateral relations between Gambia and Senegal and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the Presidential Council as a means of further elevating the cooperation between the two countries.President Barrow congratulated President Faye on his resounding electoral victory and inauguration as the 5th President of Senegal, wishing him success in implementing his government’s innovative programs. He also thanked President Faye for making Gambia his second abroad visit, which he viewed as a testament to the historical and fraternal ties between their countries.
The two heads of state expressed their satisfaction with the state of bilateral relations between Gambia and Senegal and noted the inherent nature of the ties that bind the two countries, including history, geography, culture, common development aspirations. They also lauded efforts to further strengthen cooperation in various sectors.Both leaders reaffirmed their governments’ determination to work together to advance the excellent bilateral relations between the two sister Republics, agreeing to intensify consultations between authorities to implement agreements in areas such as security, defense, forest and wildlife management, trade, air transport, education, and the judicial system.
Furthermore, they discussed various topics and the situation at regional, continental, and global levels, agreeing to continue consultation and cooperation on matters of mutual interest. They acknowledged the contributions of both countries to promoting peace, security, and development through organizations such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
President Barrow extended an invitation to President Faye to attend the 15th OIC Summit, which will take place on May 4-5, 2024 in Banjul, and thanked Senegal for its support in ensuring the Summit’s success.
President Faye accepted the invitation and expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome and generous hospitality accorded to him and his delegation. He also congratulated President Barrow in advance for the OIC Summit.
The two leaders agreed to regularly consult on matters of mutual interest and hold the next session of the Senegalese-Gambian Presidential Council in Dakar, Senegal, at a later date.This visit further solidifies the close relationship between Senegal and Gambia and sets a positive tone for continued cooperation and collaboration between the two nations.
President Faye’s acceptance of President Barrow’s invitation to attend the OIC Summit in Gambia further demonstrates the depth and strength of their ties.
