New Partnership Signed Between Senegal Government and USAIDOn Tuesday, May 23rd, the Senegalese government signed a new financial partnership agreement with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). With a budget of 31 million dollars over four years, or nearly 19 billion CFA francs, these funds will support the third phase of the Ndamir project (Alliance).According to the Senegalese Minister of Finance and Budget, the goal of this project is to “reduce the number of avoidable deaths of mothers and children, and support the implementation of the national program to combat malaria in order to improve health care through community-based health insurance schemes.” The letter of execution was signed in the presence of the US Ambassador to Senegal, Michael Raynor, the Deputy Administrator of USAID, Paloma Adams-Allen, and representatives from the Ministry of Health and Social Action.Adams-Allen expressed her satisfaction with the new project, stating that it reaffirms USAID’s commitment to work directly with the Senegalese government and other local partners to design, finance, and implement development interventions. She also noted that this new agreement will fund health teams at the district level in different regions in order to provide quality services to local populations.”Our joint efforts under our G2G program have significantly reduced malaria mortality and morbidity, including reducing deaths of children under five by 58% since 2005. We have also supported improvements in maternal and child health and helped Senegal to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Adams-Allen recalled. She also announced that, for this year, USAID plans to allocate over 45 billion CFA francs, or 75 million dollars, for health-related activities in Senegal.In regards to the previous program, Ndamir 2, the Senegalese Minister of Finance noted its “resounding success.” According to him, this project has strengthened the capacities of the Kaffrine, Kaolack, and Ziguinchor regions in implementing high-impact interventions to reduce maternal, child, and neonatal mortality.This new partnership between the Senegalese government and USAID is a positive step towards improving health care in the country. By providing funds for key interventions and supporting local health teams, it is expected to have a significant impact on reducing maternal and child mortality. This partnership also highlights the commitment of both parties to work together towards a common goal of improving lives and promoting development in Senegal
