The second round of the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers witnessed intense action on Saturday as Central African Republic, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Guinea, Senegal and DR Congo secured their spots in the final phase of the tournament.
Central African Republic (CAR) created history by qualifying for the first time, stunning Cameroon with a 2-1 comeback victory in Bafoussam.
Despite Angel Yondjo Matah’s goal for Cameroon in the 31st minute, Barry Nelson’s penalty and Bertillon Arnold Yangana’s late strike sealed CAR’s win in the 87th minute.
Seven-time CHAN participants Cameroon suffered their first ever elimination in the competition, after reaching the semi-finals in 2021.
In Bamako, Burkina Faso made a remarkable comeback against Côte d’Ivoire, overturning a two-goal deficit from the first leg. Aboubacar Traoré and Franck Kant were the goal-scorers for the victorious team.
