, Senegal Wins ECOWAS Wrestling Championship

Senegal proved victorious at the 13th annual Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) African Wrestling Tournament held in Abuja over the weekend. The team defeated host country Nigeria in the final, with a final score of 4-1.

Despite the loss, Nigeria showed significant improvement from their third-place finish in the previous tournament in 2023. The event, which took place from March 6th to 8th at the Velodrome, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, was part of ECOWAS’ 50th-anniversary celebrations.

Eleven countries participated in the three-day tournament, all vying for the highly-coveted title. In the end, Senegal emerged as the clear winner, dominating in four weight categories: 66kg, 86kg, 100kg, and 120kg. However, Nigeria managed to secure one victory in the competition.

The atmosphere at the event was intense, with passionate and skilled wrestlers from across the region showcasing their talents. The tournament served as an opportunity to celebrate the diversity and unity of West Africa through the sport of wrestling.

This year’s ECOWAS wrestling championship not only highlighted the strength and skill of individual athletes but also served as a platform for promoting camaraderie and sportsmanship among participating countries. Congratulations to Senegal on their well-deserved victory, and to all the athletes who competed in this exciting event
